How to Coordinate Heating and Cooling on a Multi-Split System

Several room controllers can make a multi-split feel like completely separate systems. Before different people choose opposite modes, check how the shared outdoor equipment is designed to operate.

Need help before you start? Ask MyTradie for a quick overview of your system.

Before you start

Identify which indoor units share the outdoor unit using the handover information. Do not open equipment or trace refrigerant pipes to work this out.

Step-by-step tutorial

  1. Make a room list. Write the rooms served by the shared system and keep each controller with the appropriate room.
  2. Check the mode rule. Read the exact product guidance. Daikin’s multi-split FAQ provides an example of systems operating in heating or cooling, not both at once.
  3. Agree the intended operation. Tell the household which mode is in use and avoid conflicting settings until the equipment’s behaviour is understood.
  4. Use normal room controls. Adjust supported room setpoints and on/off selections as the manual permits, without changing installer settings.
  5. Record an unexpected result. Note which units are on, the selected modes and any indicator or error message. Send that record with a request for help.

Check the result

The household should know which units share equipment and how to request a change in mode. Keep the short room list near the system documents rather than attaching labels to equipment openings.

Stop and get professional help if needed

Do not assume a standby indicator is solved by repeated mains resets. If the manual does not explain the behaviour or comfort remains poor, ask for a model-specific control assessment.

A common question

Do all multi-splits have identical restrictions?

No. The quoted product combination and its operating instructions decide what is supported. This tutorial is a method for checking and coordinating normal use, not a universal rule for every multi-room technology.
