5 Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Servicing Before the Queensland Summer

Brisbane and Gold Coast summers can put your air conditioner to work for long periods. A change in airflow, noise, smell or cooling performance is worth checking before the hottest weather arrives. These symptoms can have several causes, so an inspection is more useful than guessing which part needs replacing.

1. Weak or uneven airflow

Dirty filters, an obstruction, fan problems or duct issues can reduce airflow. Check the filter-care instructions in your user manual and keep the accessible air inlets clear. If cleaning the filters does not help, arrange a professional assessment.

2. New or unusual noises

A new rattle, grinding sound or repeated vibration deserves attention. Sound alone cannot identify the fault. Switch the system off if it is making a severe or unfamiliar noise, and describe when the noise occurs when booking a service.

3. Persistent unpleasant smells

A musty smell may point to a cleaning or drainage issue. A burning smell needs prompt attention: stop using the unit and have it checked. Do not open electrical compartments or attempt internal repairs yourself.

4. Cooling takes longer or bills rise unexpectedly

Hotter weather and longer running hours can change electricity use, but a noticeable performance decline may indicate a maintenance or repair issue. Tell the technician what has changed, including any error codes and whether filters have been cleaned. Refrigerant loss is not a normal maintenance requirement; if a leak is found, the cause needs attention.

5. Water leaks from the indoor unit

Condensation is part of normal cooling, but water dripping indoors or staining a wall needs investigation. Turn the system off, protect nearby furnishings where safe and arrange a check of the drainage and equipment. Keep water away from electrical fittings.

What can you do between services?

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for accessible filters, keep the outdoor unit’s airflow clear and record any recurring symptoms. Internal cleaning, electrical work and refrigerant handling should be left to appropriately qualified technicians.
