Air Conditioner Leaking Water Indoors? What to Do First

Water dripping from a wall-mounted indoor unit is a reason to stop and investigate. Do not leave it running overnight and hope the leak disappears. Protecting your wall, floor and belongings comes before testing another setting.

Stop operation and keep the area safe

Turn the system off using its normal control if you can do so safely. Keep people away from a wet floor and move nearby belongings out of the affected area. Avoid touching wet electrical equipment. If water has reached a power point or wiring, seek appropriate electrical assistance rather than handling it yourself.

Daikin’s manufacturer guidance advises stopping use when water leaks from the indoor unit and arranging an inspection. Do not remove the casing, push a tool into a drain or try to clear a blockage with compressed air.

Describe the leak rather than diagnosing it

Tell your technician where the water appears: at a corner of the indoor unit, from the air outlet, down the wall or from a nearby ceiling grille. Note whether it begins immediately, after a period of cooling or only when the system stops. A short video is often clearer than a long description.

Moisture from the indoor unit does not by itself identify the failed part. Drainage, installation and airflow all need to be considered by the person inspecting it. A filter check may be relevant, but cleaning a filter is not proof that a persistent leak has been repaired.

Useful information to send with your enquiry

  • The property suburb and the affected room.
  • Brand and model, if the label is safely visible.
  • A photo showing the whole unit and the water path.
  • Any error message or flashing indicator.
  • Whether the system was recently installed, serviced or repaired.
  • Whether water has affected furniture, paint, flooring or electrical fittings.

If you rent, notify the property manager promptly and follow the property’s maintenance process. Keep photographs and the time you first noticed the leak. This helps everyone understand the sequence without making assumptions about responsibility.

Ask what was checked during the visit

A useful service conversation should explain the observed cause, the work proposed and how operation will be checked afterwards. If the symptom is intermittent, say so: a unit that is dry when the technician arrives may still need the history and photos to guide the inspection.

Ask whether any follow-up is recommended and which warning signs should prompt another call. Keep the service record with the equipment model details, especially if the system is still within a manufacturer’s warranty period.

Can I turn it back on after the dripping stops?

The absence of a visible drip after switching off does not establish that the underlying problem has gone. Ask for guidance before putting a leaking unit back into normal use. MyTradie can discuss an inspection for Brisbane and Gold Coast homes; tell us about any active water damage when booking so the next step is clear.
